πŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬ AI Use Cases

AI in our Daily Lives

You may not realise it yet, but AI systems surround you. From advertising, and music recommendation, to loan approval and health data processing. AI is everywhere and only becoming more popular

AI is changing the way all sorts of industries work, and will continue to do so. It's also beginning to transfer into the consumer sphere, where people like us can use it with high effect.

Advertising

We live in an age of programmatic advertising. Pretty much every ad you see on the internet chosen by AI, for you. Networks put you into buckets and serve you ads based on what marketers pay for.

Make no mistake, advertisers are great at being strategic and creative. This served them well in the Mad Men days of advertising, when a smart idea and clever slogan meant an ad campaign would succeed.

But, now there are heaps of data to process. Without AI, marketers can't analyze all the data available and take action. AI manages hundreds or thousands of ads at a time. It targets, and manages budgets to optimize results. AI also helps build rich audience profiles, that predicts who will buy what.

Product Recommendations

Recommendation systems rank items for users. They help you get the most out of your experience and recommend items you didn't know you wanted.

Some examples of these include; Amazon's "People also bought" feature, Spotify's music and podcast suggestions, and Tik Tok's ability to recommend you its next super addicting video.

These systems create buckets of customers like you based on how they use the platform. The math isn't that complicated, but it shows that we are less unique than we like to think.

AI you may not see

AI has a massive effect on the systems we rely on every day. This includes things like military use, energy use prediction and more.

Finance & Loans

Financial institutions use AI to do a massive amount of their business. From assessing risk, to trading; AI has its hands everywhere. It allows the industry to make faster and more effective decisions.

One example of this is with loan approval. Credit cards and business loans are now often approved through an AI. This helps decide how likely an applicant is to repay their loan.

The finance industry uses bots to make almost instantaneous decisions based on market conditions. There is an amazing book by Michael Lewis, calledΒ Flash BoysΒ that shows how absurd this is.

Healthcare & Research

We see the use of AI in biological research, growing. AI can do great work to keep people health. Because of AI's pattern matching ability,Β it has been used more and more to improve patient outcomes through earlier diagnosis.Β It can effectively process images, biomarkers, and help identify at risk patients.

AI systems can also simulate "in silico." Biologists run experiments using simulation software, before moving into the test tube and the living system. This allows them to test way faster, and increases the speed of research.

Another problem AI has begun solving is the protein folding. This means predicting the structure of a protein. For decades scientists have worked to predict the shape of a protein.Β In 2020 Google's Deep Mind created AlphaFold2, which can predict the proteins shape down to an atom.Β This will speed up drug discovery, and individualized medicine.
